On 16 September 2005, 10am - 4pm, Priory Rooms, central Birmingham
Aims
Following on from the successful workshop on recharge late last year, a
second workshop stands more than a 50:50 chance of being organised on the subject
of uncertainty. The workshop might facilitate interchange, probably with
acknowledged experts and almost certainly with other practitioners (who knows?!), for
example:
Exchange experience and knowledge on practical and scientific issues;
Explore new & existing methods and agree best practice, particular from 'cross-over' learning between regional resource models and site contaminant transport models;
Forge links with academia;
Make recommendations on best practice and future R&D work.
Programme
a.m.: Three presentations by keynote speakers:
Tim Lewis is a senior groundwater modelling practitioner with extensive
experience of developing regional-scale groundwater models for the Environment
Agency and others. Tim will set the context for the meeting through presentation
of a number of key questions to be addressed.
Ruth Davison/Dave Hall are senior practitioners of contaminant transport
modelling, and have developed software tools for probabilistic contaminant transport
modelling which are widely used in the UK.
John Doherty is the author of PEST and runs Watermark Numerical Computing
in Brisbane, Australia. He has developed numerous tools for parameter estimation
and predictive uncertainty analysis in surface water and groundwater modelling.
The presentations will be followed by comments and action proposals from invited
participants and everyone.
p.m.: Break-out sessions, each including experts and senior groundwater
modelling practitioners. Structured questioning and discussions, aimed primarily at
identifying proposals for action from the meeting.
Final plenary session for feedback of findings from the break-out sessions, and for further
discussion (and agreement) on the proposals for action.
Participants & Booking
The workshop is open to all who are actively involved in groundwater modelling. We
anticipate that BGS, CEH, water companies, consultants, universities and the Environment
Agency would be amongst those taking part.
Places are limited: 60 participants in total, 3 people per organisation and 1 person per
Agency Region. They will be allocated on a first come-first served basis.
Unfortunately there will be no 'entry on the day' and only pre-booked attendance can be accepted.
Cost £60/per head incl. buffet lunch. To book a place send a cheque and the attached booking form to
Jeanne Thompson before
5 August 2005. Entry will be by advance payment only.
If there are insufficient numbers booked by 5 August 2005, the workshop will be cancelled and cheques
returned. If you book and your organisation has already made three bookings, your name will be put
on a reserve list and you will be offered a place if available in the 2 weeks preceding the event.
